La Traviata on the lake stage

Sonnenuntergang hinter der Seebühne

We were already a little worried that, after the long spell of hot weather we’ve just had, another thunderstorm might interrupt—or even prevent—the performance. And the weather was almost as unpredictable as the plot unfolding on stage. You kept asking yourself: Do they love each other, or don’t they...? Is it going to rain, or isn’t it...? Is she going to die, or isn’t she...? One big back-and-forth.

The audience reflected this perfectly, too, with a constant rustling as people kept putting on or taking off their rain capes, depending on what the weather was doing. And then there was the emotional roller coaster the story itself pulled you into... It was all such a wonderfully chaotic mess—just like that particular Asterix album that kept popping into my mind throughout the whole thing.

Freischütz on the lake-stage

Freischütz Seebühne

A very crazy piece — or was it just the interpretation that was so crazy? The tropical night certainly didn’t detract from the eerie winter atmosphere.

And yes, the star of the evening was definitely Samiel — played absolutely brilliantly and wildly by Niklas Wetzel. He really reminded me of the Joker. Max, on the other hand, seemed more like a bit of an imposter by comparison.

I also really liked the twist towards the end, when the piece was finally given a happy ending — it almost became a little cheesy because of that...

We love the valley of Ötz(i)

Nahezu Wintercamping ..

Mme Butterfly

Seebühne Bregenz

I hadn’t realized beforehand that this play was set in Japan. I only knew Nagasaki because of the atomic bomb. I’m not particularly drawn to Far Eastern culture, but the set alone was very simple and incredibly effective.

During the first act, a thunderstorm also rolled across the Allgäu in the background — with so much going on, you hardly knew where to look.

And yes, although there were a few slow stretches at the beginning, the ending featured a spectacular showdown, complete with a blazing fire (in that heat!) and the suicide of the female lead.

Children really shouldn’t be allowed to attend operas — that’s what makes the drama truly emotional...

And if they are allowed in, then perhaps dramas about fathers who have been estranged from their children should also be artistically explored from time to time, purely in the interests of fairness...
